As a trainer

After retiring from his career, Massimo Carrera became technical coordinator for the youth department of Juventus Turin in June 2009 . Between 2011 and 2014 he was part of the Antonio Contes coaching team for Juventus' first team. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season, he represented the temporarily suspended Conte and his assistant coach Angelo Alessio as head coach of Juve at official games. Carrera supported the team in the final of the Italian Supercup 2012 against SSC Napoli , which ended 4-0 in the Beijing National Stadium . In the three months as "head coach" at Juventus, which ended in October with the expiry of Alessio's suspension, Massimo Carrera had seven wins and three draws in ten games.

Like Alessio, Carrera also moved from Juve to the Squadra Azzurra coaching team . After the end of the Antonio Conte era in the Italian national team, Carrera was also relieved of his position as assistant coach.

He was then employed as assistant coach by Dmitri Alenitschew at Spartak Moscow. After he resigned as coach of the first team on August 5, 2016, Carrera was appointed his successor. In October 2018, when Spartak was only 7th in the league after a weak start to the season, Carrera was dismissed.
