society
Mantalos began his career at Skoda Xanthi , where he rose from the youth team to the professional squad in 2009. There he was soon able to establish himself and aroused the interest of the larger Greek clubs through good performances. In 2014, the forced relegation and therefore playing in the second Greek league signed AEK Athens Mantalos for a transfer fee of € 500,000. In his league debut for Athens, he scored one goal in the 2-1 win against Apollon Smyrnis on October 19, 2014 and prepared the other goal. With eight goals scored and eleven prepared goals in 15 league games, he made a significant contribution to the fact that Athens was able to return to the first Greek league as second division champions at the end of the season, even if he failed with a cruciate ligament rupture towards the end of the season. As a result, after his recovery, Mantalos re-established himself in the Athens attacking midfield and was named captain of the team. In 2016 he won the Greek Football Cup with AEK and scored a goal himself in the 2-1 win in the final against Olympiacos . In 2017 he was voted Greece's Footballer of the Year. In the 2017/18 season, Mantalos suffered another cruciate ligament rupture on matchday 9 in the game against Panionios Athens and was out for most of the season. He only made his comeback on matchday 28, but was able to celebrate winning the championship with AEK. Mantalos was able to compete with AEK in the following 2018/19 Champions League season , but was eliminated from Group E without a point after two defeats each against FC Bayern Munich , Ajax Amsterdam and Benfica Lisbon .
National team
Mantalos initially played for the Greek U-19 and U-21 national teams . On September 7, 2014, he made his debut for the Greek national soccer team in the 1-0 defeat in the European Championship qualifier against Romania .
