Davide Ballardini (born January 6, 1964 in Ravenna ) is a former Italian soccer player and today's soccer coach .

Player career

Ballardini played in midfield and was active at his youth club, AC Cesena , until he retired in 1992 .

Coaching career

Youth and amateur area

After retiring, Ballardini initially worked in the youth division of his last club, AC Cesena . In 1996 he moved to US Ravenna , where he was active as a youth coach until 1999. This was followed by an engagement with AC Milan , for which Ballardini also looked after youth teams for three years. From 2002 to 2004 he was responsible for the AC Parma Juniors .

In September 2004 he took over his first team in the men's area with Sambenedettese Calcio . With Sambenedettese Ballardini was fourth in the C1 series , but lost to Napoli Soccer in the semi-finals of the play-offs for promotion . The contract with Sambenedettese expired.

Professional area

After Ballardini was temporarily without a club, he benefited from the chaos at Cagliari Calcio . Already after the second match day of the 2005/06 season , the first division team had parted ways with coach Attilio Tesser and his successor Daniele Arrigoni . Ballardini thus became responsible for Rossoblù . Ballardini could not convince, however, and was dismissed after nine games without a win in November 2005. His successor Nedo Sonetti saved Cagliari from relegation.

In the summer of 2006, second division Pescara Calcio Ballardini signed as head coach at the beginning of the season. The start of the 2006/07 season failed the team with two points from six games as well as the elimination from the Coppa Italia, however, whereupon Pescara separated again from Ballardini. The club had to accept relegation at the end of the season.

After more than a year without a club, Ballardini agreed again with Cagliari Calcio on a collaboration during the winter break of the 2007/08 season . The club was at the bottom of the table with ten points from 17 games and had already sacked two coaches. Ballardini was able to collect enough points with the team for relegation and ended the season in 14th place in the table with six points ahead of the relegation ranks. Despite this success, the collaboration ended at the end of the season.

Ballardini was initially without a club for the following season . After Stefano Colantuono was dismissed after two competitive games at US Palermo , Ballardini was signed. In the remaining 37 league games Ballardini was able to score 57 points with the team and finish the season in eighth place. But Ballardini also left Palermo because he had fallen out with President Maurizio Zamparini despite the ongoing two-year contract , who finally had Walter Zenga presented as the new coach. Ballardini then had to leave the club.

For the 2009/10 season he was signed by the previous year's cup winner and Europa League participant Lazio Rome . Early in his tenure, the team won against Inter Milan the Italian Supercup in 2009 and qualified for the group stage of the Europa League . Despite an otherwise mediocre first half of the season - 16 points from 17 league games and the elimination from the Europa League in the group stage - the club's management initially stuck to Ballardini. After the elimination from the Coppa Italia against Fiorentina , Ballardini was dismissed after the 23rd match day after a 1-0 defeat by Catania Calcio , as a result of which the team slipped to a relegation zone.

For the 2010/11 season Ballardini was initially again without a club. It was only when CFC Genoa parted ways with their long-time coach Gian Piero Gasperini in November 2010 that Ballardini was given a position in Serie A again. As a result, he led the team to the top of the table and reached the round of 16 of the Coppa Italia . Ballardini was released from his activities in the club in June 2011 despite a current contract and was thus again without a club.

After Ballardini experienced the beginning of the 2011/12 season again as bystanders, he was again signed by Cagliari Calcio. In November 2011, he replaced the previously dismissed Massimo Ficcadenti . Ballardini was released in March 2012 after the team slipped to the last non-relegation place. Cagliari then put Ficcadenti back on as head coach and managed to stay in the league.

After almost a year without a job as a coach, Ballardini was signed for the second time by CFC Genoa in January 2013. He took over the Ligurians in the second half of the 2012/13 season on a relegation zone three points behind the competition. With only four defeats from 19 games, the team secured the last non-relegation place with a six point lead. Ballardini's contract expired at the end of the season and was not renewed.

Again at the beginning of the 2013/14 season without a club, he was signed by FC Bologna in January 2014 , which was in the middle of a relegation battle after separating from Stefano Pioli . In the second half of the season they only won two games, so relegation was sealed on the penultimate game day with the defeat against rivals Catania Calcio. Ballardini's contract was then not renewed.

During the 2014/15 season, Ballardini was continuously unemployed. Only in November 2015 did he get back into day-to-day business as a trainer. Giuseppe Iachini was dismissed on matchday 12 despite a midfield position, Ballardini was his successor. After seven points from seven league games and the elimination in the Coppa Italia against third division US Alessandria Calcio , Ballardini was also dismissed. Added to this were the allegations of unprofessionalism, which Palermo captain Stefano Sorrentino publicly expressed, as well as the public denunciation of his methods, which the club's president Maurizio Zamparini complained about. As a result, there were numerous coach changes at US Palermo. Fabio Viviani (one game), Giovanni Bosi (one game), Giovanni Tedesco (three games), again Giovanni Bosi (one game), Giuseppe Iachini (three games), who was dismissed at the beginning of the season, and Walter Novellino (four games) were from January to April 2016 the various trainers of the Rosanero . After Novellino's dismissal, Ballardini was reinstated, despite numerous incidents in his previous tenures. At this time, Palermo was on a relegation zone and had to play for the last realistic non- relegation zone with the promoted FC Carpi and Frosinone Calcio . The team won three of the remaining five games under Ballardini, after losing to eventual champions Juventus Turin . Relegation was secured with one point ahead of the relegation places. Ballardini's contract, which expired in June 2016, has been extended.

On November 6, 2017, CFC Genoa announced that Ballardini would succeed Ivan Jurić , who had previously been dismissed . On October 9, 2018, Ballardini was released and replaced by his predecessor Ivan Jurić.
