history

Today's Bassano Virtus 55 Soccer Team was originally founded in 1920 as Associazione Calcio Bassano in the northern Italian city of Bassano del Grappa . The city with about 43,000 inhabitants today is located in the province of Vicenza in the Veneto region . In the first few years of its existence, AC Bassano played on a regional level, before the 1940/41 season saw the first jump to the Prima Divisione, at that time the fourth-highest division in Italian football. Bassano was able to establish himself there quickly and after only one year managed to march straight through to Serie C , where they stayed until the game break due to the war. During this time Bassano had also changed his name and brought it into line with the fascist system. The association was called Associazione Sportiva Fascista Bassano from 1935 and later from 1940 Associazione Fascista Calcio Bassano . After the end of the fascist dictatorship in Italy in 1945, the name of the association was changed again and from then on it was called Associazione Calcio Bassanese , based on the name when it was founded.

After the war, Bassano continued playing in Serie C, where they stayed for three years after 1945 until the end of the 1947/48 season. With the descent into the promozione that year began a difficult phase in the club's history for the AC Bassanese, followed by a few years of deeply underclass football. It was not until 1959 that they could at least get promoted back to Serie D as the fourth highest league, but had to accept direct relegation after only one year. Until 1970, the club then played in the Prima Categoria Veneta and made two more name changes, at the end of which one finally went as Associazione Calcio Bassano Virtus in the following years. After returning to Serie D in 1970, they spent six seasons there again before another period of long regional football followed.

The tide did not turn decisively for Bassano Virtus until 1996, when the fashion entrepreneur and multimillionaire Renzo Rosso , based in Bassano del Grappa and owner of the Diesel fashion label , took over the club as owner. Thanks to Rosso's financial support, Bassano Virtus was able to regain a foothold in the higher regions of Italian football. With Renzo Rosso as owner and his son Stefano Rosso as president, Bassano Virtus rose to Serie D for the first time in 24 years in 2000 and was able to establish himself there. After the promotion to the C2 series in 2002/03 as runner-up was narrowly missed, this finally succeeded after the end of the D series in 2004/05, after taking first place in the Girone C with three points ahead of Itala San Marco . In addition, the team won the Series D championship by beating Real Marcianise in the final . As a result, Bassano Virtus established himself in the C2 series and rose to the Lega Pro Prima Divisione in 2010 , which meant the return to the third division for the first time since 1948. After eleventh place in the first year, the relegation followed only two years after the rise. In the 2013/14 season, Bassano Virtus was the first of the Girone A of the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione to qualify with eight points ahead of AC Renate for the newly founded Lega Pro as the third highest division.

On June 12, 2018, Bassano Virtus merged with Vicenza Calcio to form the newly founded LR Vicenza Virtus .
