Due to the football scandal in Italy, he and his team were able to qualify for the UEFA Cup at the end of the 2005/06 season . There he scored in the first round against the Russian club Rubin Kazan to make the all-important 1-0. Due to his loyalty to the club and his connection to Parma, he was very popular with the fans and was already traded as the future team captain. In summer 2007, he signed a new five-year contract with Parma, left the club at the end of the season after relegation to the Serie B but still. The first division club Sampdoria Genua had signed the midfielder for 4 million euros. In 2009 he moved to Cagliari Calcio on loan .
