Georg Mayr (priest)

Georg Mayr (born April 16, 1820 in Scheideck near Dorfen , † December 25, 1891 in Munich ) was a Roman Catholic priest , first President of the Catholic Journeyman's Association and builder of the Kolping House in Munich-Zentral.

Life

Mayr attended the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich up to the Abitur in 1839, then studied at the University of Munich until 1841 and then entered the Freising seminary. He was ordained a priest on July 1, 1844 . He worked as a chaplain in Thanning and Lengdorf . Before Adolph Kolping won him over as the first President of the newly founded Catholic Journeyman's Association in 1852, he worked at the Archbishop's Ordinariate . Mayr's health was limited by severe asthma throughout his life. 1854–1855 he built the Kolpinghaus München-Zentral, supported by the Katholische Zentralgesellenhaus-Stiftung , in Schommergasse, today Adolf-Kolping-Straße 1. Mayr was the first state president to head the Kolping Society in Bavaria . Because of his commitment to the consolidation and expansion of the Catholic Journeyman's Association, he was also referred to as "the second Kolping in Bavaria".
