history

The Kolping Society began as a Catholic community for traveling journeymen. In 1847 Kolping became second president of the Catholic journeyman's association founded by Johann Gregor Breuer in 1846 ; 20 years later there were already over 200 journeyman's associations that go back to Kolping. Soon separate savings and health insurance funds were set up and journeyman's homes were built. In 1864, Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler (Mainz) described the journeyman's associations as “a Catholic contribution to the solution of the workers' question ”. He highlighted the “cooperative principle”, supported by the “spirit of Christianity”, as the social impact of these associations. In 1871 the term "Kolping Family" was first heard in a church address. A network spanning all of Germany was created.

In the Weimar Republic , political opportunities also opened up for the democratically organized association, and in 1922 the first journeyman's day was held in Cologne. As a reaction to the success in Germany, further national associations were formed all over Europe and on other continents. In the time of National Socialism , the journeyman's clubs experienced considerable impairments. In order to avoid a ban, the Catholic journeyman's associations changed their name to "Kolping Families" in 1935. The Kolping Society was restricted in its activities during the National Socialist era, but not prohibited.

After the Second World War, Kolping work was resumed in the three western occupation zones . In the former Soviet zone , later the GDR , the Kolping work could only be continued in the narrow church area. The individual Kolping families were not forbidden during the existence of the GDR, but their work was considerably restricted.

Since the late 1960s, women and girls have also been able to become members of the individual Kolping families.

With the first journeyman's associations and their further training opportunities and leisure activities, the nucleus of the Catholic social movement emerged in Germany, the effect of which continued in the secular area of social education into the second half of the 20th century.
