Tournoi de France (1997)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tournoi de France ( French for tournament of France ) was a football tournament held in France in June 1997 . The competition served as preparation for the 1998 World Cup (for later World Cup tournaments this function was taken over by the FIFA Confederations Cup ) and was held in Paris and other major French cities. Four national teams took part: Brazil , England , Italy and, as host, France .

It was played in the system everyone against everyone , so that each of the four teams played three games. England finally won ahead of Brazil , France and Italy .

The highlights of the tournament were the hard-fought 3-3 draw between the Italian and Brazilian teams, as well as Roberto Carlos's free-kick goal in the 1-1 draw in the opening game between France and Brazil, when the ball took an extraordinary trajectory around the French defensive wall turned and landed in the right corner of the goal. Alessandro Del Piero was the tournament's top scorer with three goals, Romário scored twice.

The French association FFF had previously organized an invitation tournament for men of the same name ( 1988 ). From March 2020, the FFF is organizing an - it is intended: annual - four-nation tournament for women's national football teams , which is also called Tournoi de France .
