The widowed Italian Laura Rossellini returns with her children from Rome to the Algarve coast near Tavira , in the family's old country house above the sea. After her Portuguese husband's suicide, she meets family members who have remained here again. One day she finds a needy man stranded on the beach and takes him in. The injured Robert turns out to be a politically motivated activist who is wanted by police and criminals. The calm, warm summer vacation mood gets mixed up for Laura, and new questions arise about her life.
reception
The film, which is characterized by warm colors and long, calm shots, was favorably received by the critics. The clear difference to the more cynical and rougher films that Monteiro mostly showed before and after was noted.
The director Teresa Villaverde , who later became famous, was here for the first time as an actress in front of the camera, and director Monteiro himself also played a small role.
The film premiered in Portugal on October 2, 1986 and was shown a.o. a. at the 16th Figueira da Foz International Film Festival , and at the Salsomaggiore Film Festival , where it was recognized by the jury. In later years it was also shown at international festivals, around 2003 at the Thessaloniki Film Festival .
In 2003 the film was released on DVD by Lusomundo in collaboration with the Cinemateca Portuguesa . The DVD appeared in a Monteiro series, which was published at the same time as a collective retrospective in an 11-DVD box.
