Carlos Castro (born October 5, 1945 in Moçâmedes , Angola , † January 7, 2011 in New York City ) was a Portuguese journalist , writer and a well-known activist for gay rights .

Life

Castro grew up in Angola and came to Portugal after the country's independence in 1975. For many years he was the organizer of various artistic productions, such as the Grande Noite do Fado or the Gala Noite dos Travestis . As a society reporter, he wrote for various Portuguese journals and magazines, in particular for the Correio da Manhã .

On January 7, 2011, Castro, who was openly gay, was found dead in a hotel room at the InterContinental Hotel in Times Square in New York, where he had spent the New Year with model Renato Seabra. Seabra slew the journalist and castrated him with a corkscrew.

In April 2011, Renato Seabra was charged with second degree murder and was eventually sentenced to 25 years in prison.
