Odete (International title: Two Drifters ) is a 2005 film by the Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues .

action

The ambitious student Pedro and Rui, who works in a gay nightclub, have been lovers for a year. They celebrate their anniversary, but when they split up at the end of the evening, Pedro suffers a fatal car accident. Rui then falls into apathetic grief.

Young, attractive Odete works as a roller skate delivery woman in a large supermarket and wants her boyfriend to have a child. Since he doesn't want a child, she throws him out of the apartment without further ado.

The dead Pedro was Odete's neighbor in the apartment building, and she now claims to be pregnant by Pedro. She deeply mourns Pedro, loses her job and spends a lot of time every day at Pedro's grave. She comes into conflict with Rui, with whom a community of fate then suggests in the mourning for Pedro.

The critics praised the precisely drawn characters and the impressive pictures. The pop culture film creates a captivating atmosphere with its seemingly absurd scenes and moving emotional worlds. The acting performances of the two main actors were also praised, even if the character of Odete was occasionally perceived as exaggeratedly confusing and subsequently as incomprehensible.

The film screened at numerous film festivals, including the 2005 Cannes Film Festival where it received a special mention. He has won several awards, including at the EntreVue film festival in Belfort , the Bogotá Festival , and the Caminhos do Cinema Português in Coimbra . It was also named best film at the Milan International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in Milan .

The film was released on DVD in various countries and languages, as Two Drifters in English-speaking countries, and under its original title u. a. in Italy and France. In 2006 the film was released on DVD from Lusomundo in Portugal.
