Petar Stefanow Stojanow (English transcription: Petar Stefanov Stoyanov , Bulgarian Петър Стефанов Стоянов ; born  May 25, 1952 in Plovdiv ) is a Bulgarian politician . From January 22, 1997 to January 21, 2002 he was President of the Republic of Bulgaria , elected as an independent candidate, but with the support of his former party, Union of Democratic Forces (SDS). The politician and member of the European Parliament Emil Stojanow is his brother.

Life

Stoyanov studied law at the Kliment of Ohrid University in Sofia . From 1978 to 1990 he worked as a lawyer in Plovdiv.

In 1990 he began his political career as spokesman for the SDS of Plovdiv. In 1992 he became deputy minister of justice in the ODS government under Filip Dimitrov , who was also a member of the SDS. In May 1993 he became chairman of the SDS Legal Council. In 1994 he became a member of the SDS in the 37th People's Assembly as well as deputy chairman of the committee for youth, sports and tourism. In 1995 he became deputy chairman of the SDS, responsible for internal affairs.

On June 1, 1996, as an SDS candidate, he initially won the presidential elections with 66 percent of the 870,000 votes cast; on November 2, 1996, he was elected President of the Republic of Bulgaria with 59.73 percent of 2,507,517 votes cast January 1997).

At the end of 2001, Petar Stoyanov retired from political life after his defeat in the presidential elections.

Stoyanov is married and has two children.
