Film Prize of the Council of Europe (FACE Award)
The Council of Europe Film Prize (FACE Award) went to a director during the Istanbul International Film Festival on the initiative of the Council of Europe to honor his commitment to and engagement with human rights issues . He also recognizes the power of the film medium to make this problem accessible to a broad audience and thus contribute to its better understanding. In this sense, the award-winning work reflects the values that the Council of Europe itself represents: personal and political freedom and the rule of law .
Price and procedure
The jury specially appointed for the award will select the winner from among the participants in the festival's “Human Rights in Cinema” category. These can be documentaries as well as feature films that deal with social change or individual fates.
The FACE Award is presented in the form of a bronze statue and is accompanied by prize money of EUR 10,000. It is a collaboration with Eurimages , the Council of Europe fund for the co-production, distribution and showing of European films.
On April 14, 2007, the prize was awarded for the first time by Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg , on behalf of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Terry Davis . From now on, the Film Prize of the Council of Europe will be awarded annually as part of the cooperation between the Istanbul International Film Festival and the Council of Europe.
