Birdwatchers - The land of the red people (Original title: Birdwatchers - La terra degli uomini rossi ) is an Italian-Brazilian drama from 2009 .

action

A group of indigenous people lead a desolate life in a Brazilian Indian reservation . They have been robbed of their land. The forest, their livelihood, has been cleared and is now managed by a few large landowners . The tribal community is left with odd jobs as unskilled workers or as a tourist attraction on “birdwatching tours”. Some young people only see a way out in suicide .

The leader of the group manages to unite the community. They leave the reserve and camp on their land. The original way of life and culture should be revived. A young Indian in the group starts training to become a shaman. At first the group stands together.

The large landowners do not want to stand idly by the occupation of the field. They fear that this example will catch on. After a betrayal, the chief is shot dead by the landlord's henchmen.

Reviews

The work was the film tip of the Catholic film critics. "A visually stunning, ethnologically correct feature film that takes the needs of the Brazilian natives seriously and, beyond the individual example, reflects the gap between traditions and current needs."

Prisma writes: “Despite the rough ending, this South American drama is too lengthy. Many storylines ripple around without advancing the plot. The directorial work by Marco Bechis [...] could have turned out to be a gripping and extremely nasty social drama about the clash of different cultures, but it lacks the necessary atmospheric density. What remains: a few interesting insights and pictures. "
