The tournament in Torgau took place on several days in June 1527 on the occasion of the wedding celebrations and especially the journey home of the Saxon Elector Johann Friedrich I of Saxony with Sybille von Jülich-Kleve-Berg . It was publicly held by the bridegroom's father, the Saxon Elector Johann the Constant , in Torgau , his residence town, with journeyman's jousting and post-tournament and was part of his festive culture, which largely included late medieval forms of design. On the other hand, no costumes or decorations like those used in other courts at this time and which contained mythological or other allegorical elements were found.

After the participants had paid their admiration to the bride on Sunday Exaudi [= June 2nd] 1527 after the service on the Torgau market square, the competitions began, which lasted for several days. Elector Johann and his son, the bridegroom Johann Friedrich, also faced the fight personally. The participants also included the two illegitimate sons Friedrich the Wise , Friedrich and Balthasar von Jessen , who demonstrated their military skills and sporting skills in public.

Eyewitnesses to the tournament included u. a. Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon .

According to the electoral kitchen register, 31,688 people were taken care of for the wedding celebrations in Torgau for nine days in a row. There was also an extremely large number of riding and carriage horses. The most famous participants in the celebrations included 16 princes , dukes and count palatine ; 15 counts (including those of Schwarzburg , Henneberg and Mansfeld ); 10 barons and a large number of nobility and knighthood, plus numerous deputies from the University of Wittenberg and from various cities.
