Rex Daniel Grossman III (* 23. August 1980 in Bloomington , Indiana ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played for the Chicago Bears , Houston Texans and Washington Redskins in the National Football League (NFL).

Grossman went to Bloomington High School South and attended the University of Florida . He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2003 , but most of his first three seasons had to watch because of an injury. 2006 played a full season for the first time and was rewarded with a place in the Super Bowl XLI , which the Bears lost to the Indianapolis Colts at 17:29. He played for the Bears until 2008 and signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans in 2009 . From the 2010 season he played four years for the Washington Redskins . Most recently he was under contract with the Cleveland Browns and the Atlanta Falcons , but did not make it into the squad for the regular season.

Early life

With the motivation and guidance of his father Daniel, Grossman began playing American football at elementary school age. He started his career as a running back first , but despite his great success, his mother Maureen asked his coach to make him a quarterback .

At Bloomington High School , he threw 97 touchdowns at 7,518 yards . In his senior year, Grossman threw 44 touchdown passes, including one game in which he threw six touchdown passes and two games in which he threw four each. His senior year peaked when he helped his team to a 34:14 win over Homestead High School on November 28, 1998. Grossman broke the record for the most touchdowns thrown in a championship game with five touchdowns at 216 yards.

NFL

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears selected Grossman in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft . Under the leadership of Head Coach Dick Jauron , he was the substitute for the quarterbacks Chris Chandler and Kordell Stewart . Grossman didn't play until the last part of the season after the Bears had nothing to do with the play-off decisions. His season ended when he left the final game with a broken finger. Before the start of the 2004 season , the Bears fired Dick Jauron and hired Lovie Smith , under whom Grossman played the games from the start. Grossman was heavily criticized when he threw a game-ending interception in the season opener against the Detroit Lions . Criticism of his persistence was confirmed when he suffered a knee injury in the game against Minnesota Vikings while fighting for a touchdown. The injury forced Grossman to recover for the remainder of the season.

He missed a large part of the 2005 season when he broke his ankle in a preseason game . On December 18, 2005, he returned and led the Bears to a 16-3 victory over the Atlanta Falcons . In the following game against the Green Bay Packers he completed 11 of 16 passes for 166 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the 24:17 win.

Thanks to Grossman, the Bears could still reach the play-offs . In his first play-off game, Grossman only made 17 of 41 passes, for 192 yards of space gained with a touchdown and an interception. The Bears lost 21:29 to the Carolina Panthers .

During the 2006 season , Grossman became the Chicago Bears' first quarterback, starting all 16 games. The last time Erik Kramer succeeded in 1995. Despite his inconsistent game, which improved towards the end of the season, the Bears reached the play-offs in 2006 with a record of 13-3. He led the Bears to a 27:24 overtime win against the Seattle Seahawks and thus into their first NFC Championship game since the 1988 season . Grossman made 21 of 38 passes for 282 yards against the Seahawks, throwing a touchdown and an interception. In the NFC Championship Game, the Bears won with New Orleans Saints 39:14. Grossman started the game badly and showed a rather poor performance, but did not throw any interceptions and at an important point in time, at the beginning of the fourth quarter, with four successful passes in a row, led the Bears to an important touchdown that put the Bears ahead on 25 : 14 increased.

In Super Bowl XLI, Chicago lost to the Indianapolis Colts at 17:29. Grossman brought 20 of 28 passes to the goal, but only achieved 165 yards of space and a touchdown. He suffered several ball losses: He lost two fumbles and threw two interceptions. An interception from Grossman in the fourth quarter was carried back by Kelvin Hayden for a touchdown in the end zone of the Bears.

Grossman started the 2007 season , but was replaced by Brian Griese after three weak games . Grossman returned after an injury to Griese and appeared in five games before injuring his knee against the Washington Redskins and was out for the remainder of the season.

Before the 2008 season he signed a new one-year contract with the Bears, but could not prevail against Kyle Orton as starting quarterback.

Houston Texans

For the 2009 season, Grossman moved to the Houston Texans , with whom he signed a one-year contract. There he prevailed against Dan Orlovsky as a backup behind Matt Schaub .

Washington Redskins

Grossman with the Redskins (2011)

On March 17, 2010, the Washington Redskins signed Grossman. He started as a starter in the last three games of the season after Donovan McNabb was transferred to the bench. His contract was extended and he was able to secure the role as starting quarterback in a duel with John Beck in 2011 . After he threw four interceptions against the Philadelphia Eagles in week 5 , he was substituted for Beck, who was subsequently named a starter. Beck only started in three games, all of which were lost before Grossman returned. With Grossman, the Redskins won five games and lost eight games in 2011. After the Redskins had selected two quarterbacks in the 2012 NFL Draft with Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins , Grossman was the third quarterback in the Washington squad for two more years, but was not used.

Cleveland Browns

Grossman signed with the Cleveland Browns on August 12, 2014 , but was released on August 31 as part of the regular season squad downsizing.

Atlanta Falcons

Prior to the 2015 season , he signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons . Also in Atlanta Grossman missed the jump into the squad for the regular season.
