The film portrays the youth of the director Rithy Panh, who was deported together with his family by the Khmer Rouge from his hometown of Phnom Penh in 1975 at the age of 13 . As a work collective, they are forbidden from any possession (except for a spoon). The people have to toil in the rice fields and in the woods to form the new society. The parents of young Rithy Panh die, and there is a great famine with many lives. The director keeps thinking back to his happy childhood in Phnom Penh.
