Julia Loktev

Julia Loktev (born December 12, 1969 in Leningrad ) is an American film director and video artist .

biography

When she was 9 years old, her family immigrated to Colorado . She first studied at McGill University in Montreal, then from 1996 at New York University , where she submitted her film Moment of Impact in 1998 as a thesis. In it she documents the everyday life of her parents, which is characterized by the severe handicap of the father after a car accident in 1989. The film won several awards at various film festivals in 1998, including the director's award at the Sundance Film Festival , the Certificate of Merit at the San Francisco International Film Festival , the Bavarian TV Documentary Award at the Munich International Documentary Film Festival and the award for best documentary at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival .

Loktev's video installations also received international attention, including in 2000 in PS1 , in 2002 in the Haus der Kunst in Munich and in 2004 in the Tate Modern .

For her first feature film, Two Days Two Nights (2006), which depicts 48 hours from the life of a young suicide bomber in New York City, Loktev received several awards. Also, The Loneliest Planet (2011) was nominated for several awards, such as for the Gotham Awards (best film) or at the Independent Spirit Awards in 2013 (Best Director) and won among others the "Golden Tulip" at the International Istanbul film Festival 2012 .
