reception
Michael Meyns from programmkino.de thinks that director Joachim Trier is "planning a lot - sometimes too much -" with his debut film. In the beginning "an ambitious film that sometimes threatens to fail because of its own demands, but is always saved by its actors".
Joachim Kurz (Kino-Zeit.de) describes the beginning as "... a breathtaking film, a bold, fast experiment in content and form that touches on, deconstructs and reassembles a number of genres". Director debutant Joachim Trier juggled "virtuoso (...) with different levels of perception and consciousness, is sometimes profound, almost philosophical, then again casual and banal, but never boring, but always at speed." He gives his characters "emotional depth and truthfulness" and he would be "a very hot candidate" "if there was a prize for fresh, new and courageous storytelling".
“The dynamic debut film also adopts a formally confident approach to the playful handling of its protagonists, whom it observes in great detail in their search for themselves. Again and again he breaks the linear narrative flow and skilfully counteracts melodramatic developments with an authorial, ironic narrative voice and the use of the subjunctive. "
