Jacques - Discovery of the Oceans is a French biography by Jérôme Salle from 2016. It deals with the life and work of Jacques-Yves Cousteau .

action

Jacques-Yves Cousteau's son Philippe Cousteau was on a seaplane in 1979 when he ran out of fuel and fell into the sea and drowned.

Flashback to 1949: Jacques-Yves Cousteau visits with his wife Simone and their two small children Philippe and Jean-Michel for the first time the house that he was able to afford thanks to the success of various developments for diving and underwater photography. He is enthusiastic about diving and makes his own short films about the underwater world, which will soon be very popular. He quits the Navy and from then on devotes himself to filming. Lord Guinness sells him an old ship, which he calls Calypso , and which he finances his wife to make it seaworthy again. Soon he has his own group of sailors, divers and scientists around him who support him in his explorations of the seas. He receives the fuel he needs for his expeditions from the Institute for Petroleum Production , as in return he brings the institute rock samples from the depths of the sea, which are useful for exploring offshore oil sources. However, his children do not take part in the expeditions: They are sent to boarding school and only experience their parents' career from a distance.

In July 1963, Philippe and Jean-Michel return to the Calypso . The boys have become young men. Jean-Michel wants to devote himself to the study of architecture and above all to research underwater construction. Philippe is interested in the film, but also in flying - he secretly got his pilot's license - and environmental protection. Jacques-Yves signs a contract with US television that runs for twelve films. He transfers part of the expeditions to Philippe, who, however, also acts carelessly and, for example, puts the entire film team in mortal danger when shooting with sharks. In his private life things are similarly turbulent for Philippe: He marries the young Janice and soon becomes the father of a daughter. He falls out with his father Jacques-Yves because he only thinks of himself and does everything for money. In fact, he doesn't even come to his father's funeral because he's filming.

In 1971 it becomes clear that Jacques-Yves has taken over financially. The Calypso , in particular, is very expensive to maintain, but is rarely used for research trips, but rather serves Simone as a home. Jacques-Yves now wants to dare something that has never been done before: He wants to dive and film in Antarctica . A four-part series is to be created for television; the donors grant him a further financial grant. Philippe is also coming on the trip, even if he had previously canceled. During the trip, Jacques-Yves' attitude to life changes: he realizes how poaching has decimated entire herds of whales and decides to devote himself to environmental protection. He founded the Cousteau Society and henceforth brings people closer to nature conservation with lectures. This also enables him to rebuild a relationship with Philippe. He eventually dies in a seaplane accident while on the road for the Cousteau Society. Jacques-Yves blames himself and believes that he has run out of energy, but devotes several years to environmental protection.
