Constance loses her job as a real estate agent in Paris. She is forced to return to her hometown of Saintes ; on the train to town, she meets Gilles, who lives in Paris but wants to visit his mother in the hospital in La Rochelle. She tells him that her mother is also in the hospital. Both spend a night together in a hotel room. Constance moves into her mother's house that night.

Constance contacts Alain, her former boss at a small real estate agency, who is reluctant to accept her return on the phone. However, since he has advertised a position, he lets her audition. She is convinced that she is the right one for the job, having gained experience in Paris. However, the young Audrey is also applying for the position. At the company, Constance also meets Philippe again, with whom she once had a relationship and whom she left to pursue a career in Paris. He doesn't know if he'll be happy about her return. She tells him that she was fired in Paris when she resisted the harassment of her boss. Philippe puts in a good word for her with Alain, who nevertheless gives the job to young Audrey. Audrey, unlike Constance, had agreed to work on commission.

In addition to visiting her coma mother in the hospital and making love with Gilles, Constance now spends her days spying on Audrey. She finds out where she lives, secretly goes into her house during the day and learns that Audrey's friend Alex works in Novgorod and that there are always arguments between the fiancés. She introduces herself to Audrey under a false name, pretends to be a house hunter and over time creeps up on her trust. They both go jogging a lot, and Constance tries to convince Audrey to move in with Alex. Audrey is initially taken with the idea and Constance sees herself back in her old office. She learns from Philippe that Audrey is often late for work and that this has already caused internal trouble. Constance is now secretly manipulating Audrey's alarm clock and her scooter, with which she drives to work. Audrey is not fired, however. Constance learns that Audrey and Philippe are having an affair and that Audrey is likely to break up with Alex.

Constance's constructed world collapses. She reports her Parisian boss to harassment, but learns that he has already reported her. In fact, after the end of the affair, which he admits, she had called him over a thousand times within a few months and followed him with hundreds of messages. Constance will soon be unable to spy on Audrey as she lives with her parents, who will be returning shortly. Gilles is actually married with one child - he begins to ignore Constance's calls. It turns out that her visits to the hospital were not aimed at her mother, but for Gilles, who reacted in horror when he found her at the hospital bed. She threatens to betray his affair with her to his family. Her own mother lives in a nursing home, has dementia and does not recognize her. While jogging with Audrey, Constance tries to convince her that her boss Alain is going to bother her and advises her to report him. Audrey tells her that Alain has offered her a permanent position that she will accept. As the two of them jog past a steep slope, Constance pushes Audrey into the depths.

Some time later, Philippe informs Constance that Audrey's body has been found. She rushes to Philippe and shows great interest in the circumstances of death, since she jogged along the route every day. Philippe is slightly irritated. Constance goes to her former office where Audrey worked. She sits down in her chair and throws Audrey's name tag away. Philippe looks at her for a long time through the glass, he swallows.

It was not my fault that Sébastien Marnier made his debut feature film, who had previously made two short films and had appeared as a screenwriter. The film was shot in the summer of 2015 in Paris and in the Charente-Maritime department , including Saintes . The real estate agency where Constance had worked was found in a real estate agency on the Quai de la République in Saintes, right on the Charente River . Marité Coutard created the costumes and Mathieu Menut designed the film .

Not my fault premiered on July 3, 2016 at the Festival International du Film de La Rochelle and hit French cinemas on July 6, 2016. ARTE first broadcast the film on German television on January 16, 2019.
