The Country Doctor by Chaussy is a 2016 French feature film directed by Thomas Lilti .

action

Jean-Pierre Werner has been working as a doctor in the village of Chaussy for many years , where he runs a small practice, and makes house calls in the area. His mother also lives in the village; Jean-Pierre also has a grown son who, like his mother, lives in the big city. One day Jean-Pierre learns that he has an inoperable temporal tumor in the left hemisphere. Chemotherapy is an option, but he should stop working and avoid stress. Jean-Pierre agrees to therapy, but wants to continue working.

One day Nathalie Delezia appears in Jean-Pierre's practice. He thinks she is a patient, but it turns out that Jean-Pierre's doctor, Michel Norès, sent her to him as his new colleague. Nathalie is no longer a young woman and so Jean-Pierre reacts negatively when he hears that she has just finished her practical year. However, Nathalie is not an inexperienced doctor. She worked as a nurse for a long time and also did her PhD. Since she grew up near Chaussy, she wanted to settle in the country as a doctor anyway. Jean-Pierre first lets them run up, sends them alone to difficult patients and confronts them with situations that must overwhelm them. He corrects her mistakes and explains her special features of individual patients, for example the home care of 92-year-old Sorlin is particularly important to him. Under no circumstances should he go to the hospital again, since he cannot be cured. Nathalie wins Jean-Pierre's respect when she proves herself in the treatment of a Sinti and Roma woman. When he medically examines Nathalie for her health certificate, he does not respond to her cautious flirtation attempts.

Jean-Pierre realizes that the cancer is progressing. He smells a burning smell where there isn't one and can soon only see things with one half of his face. He begins chemotherapy, but refuses to cut back on his job and does not want to tell his family or Nathalie about his illness. When he comes back to the practice after treatment, Nathalie tells him that she had Sorlin hospitalized because of his poor health. Jean-Pierre reacts indignantly that he had promised Sorlin never to do this and dismisses Nathalie without notice. Shortly afterwards the mayor of the village is seriously injured and Jean-Pierre calls Nathalie for emergency help. During the mission, Jean-Pierre injured his ankle and collarbone. He has Nathalie X-ray and she recognizes metastases on the X-ray of the shoulder, but does not tell him. Michel Norès advises her not to ask Jean-Pierre about his illness. The latter, in turn, does not want to supplement chemotherapy, which is hardly effective, with a promising radiation therapy.

Nathalie integrates herself into village life and wins the trust of the patients. She finds new therapeutic approaches and can deal with some patients better than Jean-Pierre. In a spontaneous action, he fetches old Sorlin from the hospital and brings him back to Chaussy. Here he organizes a care program and Sorlin can finally die in peace at home. Nevertheless, Jean-Pierre is disillusioned after Sorlin's death, as he has the feeling that he is only repairing nature's faults, with nature always winning in the end. He realizes that Nathalie knows how sick he is, and she admits that she saw tumors on the X-ray at the time. A renewed examination after several weeks of chemotherapy now shows that Jean-Pierre's brain tumor has shrunk significantly.
