Bouchardy

Bouchardy was the name of a family of 19th century French portrait artists . The theater poet Joseph Bouchardy also came from her .

Bouchardy père

Bouchardy, whose first name is not known for sure, but is mentioned in literature (including contemporary literature) as Bouchardy père (father), came to Paris from Lyon and worked there as a draftsman of miniature portraits from 1808 to 1840. Between March and July 1811 he took over the studio of Gilles-Louis Chrétien , the inventor of the Physionotrace , a device that mechanized the process of portraying to a small extent. The formal shape of his standardized profile views in a round or oval image section with the subline Dess [inée] et Gr [avée] par Bouchardy Suc [cessor] de Chrétien, inv [enteur] du Physionotrace. Palais Royale No. 82 à Paris (e.g. in 1814) follows the style of its predecessor. Its address has been rue Neuve des-Petites-Champs since 1830 .

Etienne Bouchardy

Etienne Bouchardy was probably a son of Bouchardy père . The extensive production of the Physionotrace portraits signed "Bouchardy" is often added to the work of Etienne Bouchardy (born June 22, 1797 in Paris; † April 13, 1840 ibid.). Although he was also a good portrait draftsman, of whom some scattered published miniatures are known, he did not finish his training at the academy before 1814 and can therefore hardly be considered as Chrétien's successor. A distinction between the two artists emerges from the information and quotations in Cromer, but is not taken into account in various handbooks (Larain / Adhemar; General Artist Lexicon).

Pauline Bouchardy

Pauline Bouchardy was probably a daughter of Bouchardy père and worked as a pastel painter in Paris in the 1830s.
