life and work

Joseph Bouchardy came from the family of artists Bouchardy , devoted himself first to the engraver art and provided a number of sheets in aquatint . Damm he turned to the stage, for which he wrote, initially in association with Eugène Deligny , vaudevilles and other pieces. In 1836 he edited the Vaudeville Le fils du bravo and the drama Hermann l'ivrogne with Deligny . These two works were soon followed by numerous other plays for the theaters de la Porte-Saint-Martin , de la Gaîté and de l'Ambigu-Comique . Of these dramas, Gaspardo le pêcheur (1837), Le sonneur de Saint-Paul (1838) and Lazare le pâtre (1840) met with great acclaim and were performed hundreds of times in a row in the tabloids. They are spectacle pieces with a large display and of excellent architecture. Bouchardy's skill on the stage, the skillful arrangement of his plays and the simplicity of his dialogues were praised.

Later, Bouchardy performed a few more dramas, such as Philidor (1860) and L'armurier de Santiago (1868), but without being able to build on the earlier success. He died in Châtenay in 1870 at the age of 60.
