action

Antoine Derouère has just finished police school and decides to work on the Paris homicide squad. With this he offends his wife, who works in Le Havre . He is highly motivated himself. When he started working for the criminal police, Chief Inspector Caroline “Caro” Vaudieu resumed her duties there. She has been a dry alcoholic for two years and has worked in other positions since her withdrawal. She regularly attends Alcoholics Anonymous sessions. Caro takes a liking to Antoine, who reminds her of her son. He would be the same age as Antoine now, but died in childhood. Caro is burdened by his death to this day. Caro often sets up joint investigations with Antoine. They both talk privately and later even smoke a joint together.

A dead person who had spent the night before in the sobering cell of the police is recovered from the Seine. It is a Polish homeless man Walesa, who, according to forensic medicine, was badly beaten before he died. Walesa's friend Kaminsky reports that Walesa was with two Russians before his death. He only knows the name “Piotr” of the one. A few days later, an Englishman with severe stab wounds is rescued from the Seine. Again two Russians were involved, and the testimony of witnesses and the injured man reveal that the perpetrators must be the same. In a roundabout way, the investigators find out that Piotr was with Walesa at the grape harvest. At the winery, Caro and Antoine receive a photo that shows Piotr. They also make a note of other Russians who helped with the grape harvest at the time. They know that one of these people must be the accomplice they are looking for. Back in Paris, they learn that Piotr no longer lives at the address they know. They are now looking for the other Russians in separate teams. Caro arrests with Solo and other men Anton Doudalev, who tells them that the second man they are looking for is Pavel Dimitrov.

Antoine and Louis Mallet are now the second team to search various dormitories for the names of the wine harvest workers. You have already left 15 dormitories unsuccessfully and Louis is fed up with it. However, Antoine urges them to go to another dormitory that is on their route. Louis lets him do the exam and meanwhile sits down in a nearby café. Antoine finds out that Pavel Dimitrov, who is listed on his overview, is registered in the dormitory. When he tries to get Louis from the café, the bar is only half full. However, Louis cannot be seen. Antoine decides to act on his own - a fatal decision. He goes to Pavel and wants to see his papers. He dares to go too far and Pavel stabs him several times before he takes flight. Only after a few minutes does Louis appear to look for Antoine. He finds the seriously injured young police officer in a pool of blood and alerts the emergency services. Louis' unprofessionalism costs him his job. Antoine is in mortal danger, and Caro suffers a relapse: In a bar she has her tonic gin and finally spends the night drunk with her former boyfriend, Judge Serge Clermont. He builds it up the next day and tries to take away her fear of the future.

The investigators receive more information about Piotr and Pavel and finally a tip about where Piotr is. You can put it at a metro station. There is Walesa blood on his shoes. You are now listening to Piotr's mobile phone and through further wiretapping of the connections of his confidants, you learn that Pavel has often been near the Orthodox Church in Paris. They go to the local priest, but he cannot help them. After leaving the church, Caro receives a call: Antoine has died of his injuries. She collapses. She later attends Antoine's funeral with her colleagues.

The investigators learn that Pavel is in Nice. Here you can find him in a hotel. The special task force storms his room. When Pavel opened fire on the police officers and escaped from the window, Caro shot him. Caro leaves the experience behind in doubt. She doesn't know if returning to Homicide was the right thing to do. Quarreling with herself, she goes to the sea and runs along the water.

criticism

The film-dienst praised a fatal decision that "precisely and unspectacularly [depicts] everyday police operations" and also "denounces latent racism, sexism and undesirable social developments with critical undertones". It also convinces “through the almost documentary perspective of the camera.” “A bitter, gripping police film about the here and now, with everyday heroes that go beyond the broad-meshed Hollywood clichés,” said Cinema . Der Spiegel wrote that director Beauvois "made a strictly composed, laconic police film and at the same time a precise study of the milieu that is as exciting as the hunt for the perpetrator."
