Friedrich Junge (born December 8, 1832 in Pölitz , † May 28, 1905 in Kiel ) was a German teacher and biologist .

Life

Junge attended the teachers' college in Bad Segeberg from 1851 to 1854 and was a teacher in Lütjenburg from 1854 to 1857 and 1864 to 1873 . Here Junge explored the Hohenfeld mill pond and described it in his book. From 1857–1864 he worked as a village school teacher in Blankenese and Plön and from 1873–1899 as a main teacher and (from 1878) headmaster of the first girls' community school in Kiel until retirement in 1899. Here Karl August Möbius influenced the work of Friedrich Junge. Its importance lies in the ideas for the reform of science teaching, which today are summarized in their entirety under the term reform pedagogy .

The pedagogue wanted to replace the mere memorization of facts by recognizing connections, especially in elementary school lessons, and placed great emphasis on practical perception. This combination of innovative pedagogy, biological interest and a holistic approach to nature culminated in his main work The village pond as a living community, along with a treatise on the aim and method of teaching natural history . It first appeared in 1885 and was reprinted in several editions. In the book, Junge describes how simple examples from the village environment can convey an understanding of biological relationships. Even today, the book is considered a classic in natural science education and shows Junge as a forerunner of modern ecosystem research .

Young grave is in the park cemetery Eichhof in Kronshagen near Kiel.
