Eragon - The Legacy of the Dragon Riders is a film adaptation of the fantasy novel of the same name, Eragon, by the American writer Christopher Paolini .

action

The 17-year-old orphan Eragon from the small village of Carvahall finds a strange stone in a mountain range, the hump, which later turns out to be a dragon's egg and from which the blue dragon lady Saphira hatches. Through Saphira, as well as through Brom, the storyteller of Carvahall, Eragon learns that he is now a dragon rider and that he must now fear for his life. Because King Galbatorix, who is himself a dragon rider and keeps the kingdom of Alagaësia cruelly suppressed, has it in for the other dragon riders and wants to force each one under his rule. Whoever does not bow to him will be killed. Eragon feels this when the Ra'zac, creatures of Galbatorix, attack Carvahall, destroy his farm and kill his uncle Garrow.

Eragon sets out with Saphira and Brom to visit the Varden, a group of rebels who refuse to submit to Galbatorix. On the way there they pass through Teirm, where Eragon is told the future of the witch Angela. Shortly afterwards, he discovered his magical abilities during an attack by the Urgals, a people of warlike, human-like beings and allies of Galbatorix.

During their journey Eragon is tutored by Brom and so Eragon learns to ride Saphira, fight with the sword and use magic in a controlled manner. Suddenly they are attacked again by the Ra'zac, but together they manage to defeat the enemy. After the fight, Brom is recognized by Eragon as a former dragon rider. Brom explains that his dragon was murdered by Morzan, a traitor and ally of Galbatorix. He himself persecuted Morzan for this and finally killed him, and with him his dragon, the last besides the king's. After that he hid for years as a storyteller in Carvahall.

Eragon begins to dream of Arya, an elven princess who asks for help and explains that she is being held captive by Durza, a shadow, in Gil'ead. In fact, the shadow itself speaks through them to lure Eragon to it.

When Eragon tries to free the elf despite Brom's warning, he is attacked by Durza. When the latter throws a spear at him, Brom jumps in between, saving Eragon's life. Eragon uses the chance to drive Durza off with an arrow shot in the head. When Eragon, Brom and Arya want to flee on Saphira's back, the king's soldiers stand in their way. A stranger kills the guards and enables them to escape. After Saphira, Eragon, Brom and Arya fled the fortress of Gil'ead, the wounded Brom dies on Saphira's back. He is buried in a stone grave by the others. Saphira's hot breath transforms the stones into a crystal-like mass that encloses his body and thus preserves it.

Eragon must now move on without bromine. Soon they meet the young stranger who saved him from the guards. He wants to join them and promises to take them to the Varden. When the small group finds the entrance to the Varden caves in the Beor Mountains, they are attacked by Urgals and can only escape by fleeing to the rebels' hideout. There the stranger is recognized by Ajihad, the leader of the Varden, as Murtagh, son of the traitor Morzan, and imprisoned by the rebels and the dwarves. At first there is nothing Eragon can do about it.

Soon Durza, who can only be killed as a shadow with a stab in the heart, attacks the rebels' hideout with a large army of Urgal and enemy soldiers. The Varden and the dwarfs living there fight valiantly in battle with the help of Eragon and Saphira. It comes to the final fight between Eragon and Durza, who has conjured a kind of dragon out of black smoke. In the end, Eragon succeeds in defeating Durza once and for all by piercing his heart. But Saphira is seriously injured in the fight. After Eragon has healed her with the last of his strength, he collapses.

When he wakes up again, Arya has already left to return to her home, the city of elves. Eragon catches up with Saphira and speaks a few more words with her. She assures him that they will see each other again soon. Then they part ways.

In the last scene you can see Galbatorix, who angrily cuts the large map of Alagaësia with his sword, behind which his black dragon Shruikan emerges.

continuation

The filming of The Order of the Elder - Part 2 of the book series - is not planned for the time being, even if it initially looked like it. The US toothpaste brand Aquafresh even held a competition, the winner of which was to win an extra role in part 2.

criticism

Gernot Gricksch of TV-Media wrote that the film was reminiscent of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings ; it is an elaborate cinema spectacle that should interest all age groups. However, not all magazines and programs rate the film so positively: In the MTV News it was z. B. viewed as illogical, which the moderator attributed to the fact that the author was relatively young at the time of creation. SpiegelOnline described the film as soulless. The Westdeutsche Zeitung wrote: “ Many effects, but nothing behind them. “On the film site cinema.de it was said that the child-friendly fantasy adventure lacked any sense of timing or even tension.

Even in the fan base, the film is seen by many as a disappointment, especially since the plot of a 700-page book has been shortened to 105 minutes of film time and serious changes have been made to the content. In addition, many central people, actions and consequences of the second part were only briefly or not dealt with at all, so that a filming of the second part seems very difficult or even impossible. Parts of the fan base are even calling for a remake that is more correct in terms of content and enables a longed-for sequel based on the example of the books.

Although AMPAS thought about nominating Eragon for Oscars in a few categories (e.g. visual effects), it did not.

Awards

In addition to a Costume Designers Guild Award nomination for Kym Barrett in the category Best Costume Design of a Fantasy Film , Eragon was nominated for two Saturn Awards in the categories Best Fantasy Film and Best Actor in a Fantasy Film ( Ed Speleers ).
