action

Matt Leland lives in Seattle with his father and two younger siblings . At school he meets the new student Casey Roberts. He is fascinated by her exuberant manner and falls in love with her. After Casey sets off a fire alarm in the school during an important exam in which Matt is also taking, so that the exam can be interrupted and he can accompany her to an exhibition, she is expelled from school. This leads to a heated argument between Casey and her parents, whereupon she swims to him late at night through the lake that separates hers and Matt's house. The two spend the night together.

Shortly afterwards, Casey and her parents have another bad argument. As a result, she tries to kill herself with sleeping pills. Casey is admitted to the closed ward of a mental hospital. But Matt manages to flee the clinic with her. You decide to go to Mexico . On the way to Mexico, Matt causes an accident after a game Casey persuades him to play in her boundless exuberance while driving, and his car is totaled.

They eventually hitchhike and while Matt is nodding off in the back seat, the driver begins to pester Casey. When he puts his hand on her lap, she presses a glowing cigarette in his face. The man stops and tries to drag Casey out of the car, but Matt pounces on him. Casey, meanwhile, gets behind the wheel of the car. She lets Matt get in and the man stands on the street.

Over the next few days, Casey showed increasingly noticeable behavior. One moment she is in a good mood and full of energy, the next she feels followed and watched. Matt doesn't know how to help her and ends up calling Casey's parents. Her father tells him Casey is manic and depressed and needs urgent medical attention. He wants to pick them up, but Matt doesn't tell him where they are and hangs up.

Casey overheard parts of the conversation that lead her to believe Matt told her parents where they were so they could pick them up. She secretly takes the car and drives off in a panic. Matt just sees them drive away. He steals a car and races after her. He finds Casey standing in the desert, a gun in hand that she found in the man's stolen car. She is completely desperate and threatens to shoot herself. Matt can prevent this from happening, however. Casey is then taken back to a clinic. Some time later, Matt receives a letter from her saying that she is better.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was "poor". He couldn't decide whether to be a film about mental illness, teenage romance, or a road movie .

The lexicon of international films describes the film as “a sensitively staged and atmospherically photographed psychodrama that gains intensity and credibility primarily through its outstanding leading actress. With his plea for professional inpatient treatment of the mentally ill, he encourages discussion. "

The Frankfurter Rundschau found that "the only thing that stands out above the smug surface of the film and makes it worth mentioning [...] is the subtle and touching acting of Drew Barrymore" - through "their seemingly effortless oscillation between the various configurations of madness" .
