Mondo Cannibale, Part 2 - Der Vogelmensch (Original title: Ultimo mondo cannibale ) is an Italian cannibal film by the film director Ruggero Deodato from 1977, which is close to the exploitation genre .
action
The production suggests a pseudo-real story that is said to have happened in 1975 in the jungle of the island of Mindanao .
The businessman and oil seeker Robert Harper is on the way to the Philippine capital Manila with his friend Ralph, the pilot Charlie and his girlfriend Swan . On the way, they land on schedule with their small aircraft in a small base camp in the middle of the jungle. Your aircraft is damaged in the process. Robert and Ralph use the repair time to explore the abandoned camp of their friendly employees more closely. In addition to a destroyed radio, you will also find a primitive, blood-streaked weapon that appears to have been made by natives. They also come across a massacred team member in the vicinity.
In the meantime, dusk falls and the group has to hold out unexpectedly in this place despite the restored flight ability. At night, Swan, the friend of the pilot, is kidnapped, kidnapped and murdered by a local cannibal tribe while leaving . The next morning, the three men set out to find the missing person. During the venture, Charlie falls into a trap and dies. Robert and Ralph lose their bearings, slightly shocked, and finally come to a river where their paths part. Both men are now on their own.
A little later, the exhausted Robert is captured by the cannibals and after a martyrdom locked in an oversized bird cage, under the assumption that the stranger is a bird person and can fly. During the humiliating imprisonment he apparently conforms to the manners and customs of the natives; With the forced help of the attractive Pulan, he escapes from a huge rock cave that serves as a refuge for the primitives. In doing so, he tears the young natives from their tribe against their will. Pursued by the angry cannibals, he and his escape assistant meet Ralph, who was believed to be lost.
The trio tries to get through to the rescue plane. After an arduous march, the fugitives are caught and harassed by the cannibals. Pulan is beheaded and eaten by members of her tribe , while Ralph is merely injured. At the end of the film, Robert can only escape the natives by apparently becoming a cannibal himself by taking the innards of a recently killed enemy in his mouth and apparently swallowing them. Then the hunters let go of him. Ralph dies while being rescued from the "green hell", while Robert returns to the civilized world.
background
The highly successful production is intended to give the impression of being a documentary in the form of an adventure film and, according to Deodato, is based on an article in National Geographic about a cannibal tribe that lived in caves on a nearby Philippine island. The genre-common, real animal killings to illustrate the cannibalistic rites were panned by the critics, but were just as little missing as in the Cannibal Holocaust (1980), produced three years later , in which Deodato found his way back to the cannibal topic. This time the director and his producers had to answer for the cruel animal slaughter in court. Deodato lost and was unable to work as a film director for several years. The index of the film was lifted in February 2018 after the application, after it had been indexed in 2007.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films wrote that the film's "thin plot" was a "hook for depicting extreme atrocities."
