The Revenge of the Cannibals (original title: Cannibal Ferox ) is an Italian-Spanish exploitation film by director Umberto Lenzi from 1981. The cannibal or moon film contains a series of splatter and gore scenes with excessive depictions of animal killings or cruel bodily mutilation.
In terms of content, the film is about unscrupulous whites who invade the territory of indigenous peoples in order to exploit, torture and enslaved them. The perpetrators then become victims of the avenging native tribes, who are extremely cold-blooded and cruel.
action
The American anthropology student Dina is traveling with her brother Gary and their mutual friend Pat to the Colombian Amazon basin in order to prove for her dissertation that cannibalism is nothing more than the fantasy of the white population. According to their thesis, the conquerors use the documented cases of man-eating as a pretext to justify atrocities and massacres of the natives.
On their way to a remote jungle village, their rented off-road vehicle gets stuck on a dirt road in the mud, undeterred the students continue their journey on foot, but make only slow progress. Along the way, the adventurers discover the remains of two locals who somehow fell into a deadly trap. Shortly afterwards, drug addict Mike, who was involved in a massacre against natives, crosses their path with his wounded companion Joe. Mike, a sadistic criminal who has ventured into the impassable area to search unsuccessfully for emeralds , reveals to the shocked group that cannibals do exist. These "savages" would now seek him and his companion after life. However, he withholds the truth from them and uses a fictitious story to make it appear that he and Joe are innocent victims, but not the real triggers of the vindictive and hunting Indian tribe.
From then on, the five of them decide to find a way to a saving river, which they manage until dusk. The next morning, Dina, who doubts the story of the two haunted men because she thinks Mike is untrustworthy, has disappeared without a trace. In search of the missing person, the adventurers get lost in the dense jungle, but soon find Dina and end up in an almost deserted cannibal village. At this point the young men of the tribe are on the “hunt”, looking for the fugitive Mike. Meanwhile, Joe's condition deteriorated rapidly, and it was decided to stay in the village. At a different time, Mike and Pat discover their mutual sympathy, which ends in passion. In a love frenzy, exacerbated by the influence of drugs, Mike kills a young native for no reason, resulting in a scuffle with Gary. When Joe informs the siblings shortly before his death about Mike's aggressive search for gemstones with a fatal outcome, i.e. tells them the true story, the siblings plan to flee together with Pat. She, in turn, already fled with Mike.
Unfortunately, the warriors of the Indian tribe come back at that moment when they find the body of the deceased Joe and unceremoniously eat him in front of Dinas, who now realizes that there are cannibals after all. The "intruders" gradually feel the revenge of the natives, who kill them extremely brutally - until only Dina survives. The young woman escapes, with the significant help of a native escape helper, and using all the forces of the death trap.
At the end of the film she arrives in civilization, completely traumatized, where, three months later, almost motionless, she receives her doctorate in anthropology for her work on the subject of “Cannibalism - End of a Myth”, in which she scientifically refutes the existence of cannibals.
Reviews
"Speculative trivial cinema with excessive cruelty."
"The film is a hodgepodge of atrocities and shows, in addition to realistically staged ogre-eater activities, the castration of a man and a woman who is hung by the breasts."
