Hans Rouc

Hans Rouc , born Johann Rouc , also Henryk Rouc , (born August 14, 1893 in Vienna ; † January 26, 1963 there ) was an Austrian architect and film architect .

Live and act

Johann 'Hans' Rouc had attended the graphic teaching and research institute in his hometown Vienna and then worked as a set designer and painter in the studios of Hans Kautzky and Franz Angelo Rottonara . From 1914 to 1916 Rouc was drafted for military service.

After his release, he went to film in 1917 and was initially hired by Sascha Kolowrat-Krakowsky as an artistic assistant or architect's assistant. In these functions he was also involved in the Sascha productions " The Lady with the Black Glove " and " Prince and Beggar Boy " by the directors Alexander Korda and Michael Kertesz in 1919/20 .

Rouc gained practical experience, mentioned by name since 1921, especially at the side of the film architects Julius von Borsody and Artur Berger . From 1922 he collaborated frequently with his Hungarian colleague Stefan Wessely over the next few years . In the same year, Rouc and Wessely worked with their teacher Borsody to produce the extremely elaborate film structures for the monumental film Sodom and Gomorrah . Middle of that decade Rouc was two in the buildings of other major Austrian silent films, The Hands of Orlac and Der Rosenkavalier , involved.

In 1928/29 he went to Poland , where he designed the buildings for several film productions as Henryk Rouc. After returning to Vienna - in the meantime the sound film era had dawned - Hans Rouc retired from film architecture and worked again as an architect.

Only after the Second World War did Rouc temporarily return to film and again cooperate with his colleague and teacher Borsody in the production of film decorations. In later years Rouc was awarded the title of professor for his professional achievements . Rouc died at the age of 70 and was buried on January 31, 1963 in Vienna.
