The Dead Wedding Guest is an Austrian silent film drama from 1921 by and with Max Neufeld , based on the poem " Don Ramiro " by Heinrich Heine .

action

Spain, in the Middle Ages. Don Ramiro returns home from a battle he won against the Moors . The whole of Toledo is on its feet to celebrate the victorious hero. Donna Clara's jubilation in particular is deeply honest, as the two were united by a deep love before Ramiro entered the fray. Don Fernando observes this relationship with suspicious and disapproving eyes, as he himself shows great interest in the king's niece, for whose hand he has asked (so far in vain). Since the Spanish king awards Don Ramiro with a ducal title, he now believes that the monarch will no longer refuse his wish to marry Princess Donna Clara.

But the insidious Fernando beats Ramiro and now has the king on his side with regard to his own marriage intentions. Don Ramiro is sent on royal orders to Granada , where he is installed as the new governor. At the tearful farewell to his loved one, Donna Clara swears eternal loyalty to him. Knowing the annoying competitor in distant Granada, Don Fernando sees his chance and, with the help of the king, finally wants to lead Clara to the altar. Finally she agrees. Like all other governors in the country, Ramiro will be invited to the upcoming wedding as a wedding guest. But on the ride to the celebration, the Caballero crashed on a cliff and died in the process. Lying dying, he gives his squire the task of carrying his corpse to the wedding reception as the eponymous dead wedding guest, so that he can still attend the hated marriage.
