life and career

Sabu was the first Indian actor to achieve world fame through British and American films. He was discovered by Robert J. Flaherty and Zoltan Korda for the semi-documentary film Elefanten-Boy in 1937. He celebrated his greatest successes in the early 1940s with the adventure films The Thief of Baghdad and The Jungle Book . For him, these films were the stepping stone to Hollywood . He signed a contract with Universal , but was never able to build on the successes of his childhood films. On January 4, 1944, Sabu became a US citizen and served in the American Air Force as a rear gunner in aircraft during World War II . From the late 1940s onwards, he mainly played supporting roles or in second-rate productions. His last film for Disney , A Tiger Walks (1964), was released posthumously and once again received good reviews.

Sabu married the actress Marilyn Cooper (* 1923) in 1948 . They were married and had two children until his death. Sabu died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 39 and was buried in Hollywood's Forest Lawn Cemetery. On the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Hollywood, a star for Sabu is let in at "6251 Hollywood Boulevard". The studio cinema of the Lichtburg in Essen is named after Sabu.
