The Temple Treasure of Bengal (original title: Il tesoro del Bengala ) is an Italian adventure film from 1953, directed by Gianni Vernuccio based on a novel by Emilio Salgari with the former child star Sabu in the lead role. On January 21, 1958, the film was also released in a shortened version in German distributors.

Portuguese land on the Bengal coast and take three girls from the nearby village prisoner, from whom Karima, with the help of her fiancé Ainur, manages to escape. The Portuguese then want to go to the temple of the goddess Parvati , which is in the village, because they are after the precious ruby ​​located there. They negotiate with the village chief, with Uzake, who hates Ainur because he is in love with Karima himself. Ainur managed to avoid a reenactment at first, but was soon picked up by Uzake's guards together with Karima.

When the ruby ​​is stolen that night, which is discovered by the young Tomby. He frees Ainur, who is to be thrown against the tigers; together they go in search of the thieves. Uzake orders that Karima should be sacrificed for the reconciliation of the goddess. At the last minute, Ainur, returning with the stolen diamond, can expose Uzake's machinations and save Karima. In a duel he defeats the village chief.

criticism

A. Albertazzi judged that the film could not implement his intentions due to numerous technical and artistic errors and was therefore not of particular interest. The lexicon of international film was just as strict: "A shallow picture-sheet story based on common models that is only reasonably entertaining."
