Joel Gretsch (born December 20, 1963 in St. Cloud , Minnesota ) is an American actor.

Life

Joel Gretsch trained as an actor at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. In 1989 he went to Los Angeles and made his theatrical debut in Molières Tartuffe . He then played the title character in John Patrick Shanley's Danny and the Deep Blue Sea .

His television career began in the early 1990s, starring in a few episodes of A Terribly Nice Family , Melrose Place, and Saved by the Bell: The New Class . He later played minor roles in the television series CSI: Miami , JAG , Friends and Navy CIS . Gretsch was best known to cinema audiences for his role as Bobby Jones in the DreamWorks film The Legend of Bagger Vance , and he starred in Club of the Caesars and Minority Report in 2002 . He played the role of Captain Owen Crawford in the Emmy- nominated science fiction miniseries Taken , produced by Steven Spielberg .

From 2003 to 2007 he starred as Tom Baldwin in the US television series 4400 - The Returners . In 2007 he played Thomas Gates in The Legacy of the Secret Book . From 2009 to 2011 he played Jack Landry, one of the main characters in the series remake V - The Visitors . Gretsch has been married to actress Melanie Shatner , the daughter of William Shatner , with whom he has two children, since 1999 .
