Perdita Durango (alternative title Dance with the Devil ) is a gangster film or road movie by the director Álex de la Iglesia , released in 1997 . It is based on a novel by Barry Gifford , the screenwriter of Wild at Heart and Lost Highway .

Topics such as kidnapping, rape, black Santeria rites, sadism , masochism and ritual desecration are presented.

action

The film begins on the Mexican - Texan border and tells about how the young prostitute Perdita Durango meets the Santeria priest Romeo Dolorosa. They accept an order from a mafioso to transport a load of frozen embryos to Las Vegas in a truck in order to deliver them to a cosmetics manufacturer in Gambling City. On the way there, they kidnap a white teenage couple whom they want to sacrifice in a kind of Santeria ritual . Perdita and Romeo, who are completely addicted to each other, are chased by the police, former criminal friends of Romeo and on top of that by the kidnapped girl's father.

Different versions

The German TV version and one of the two video versions available there have been cut and have an FSK approval from 16 years of age .

reception

According to some critics, De la Iglesias manages to arouse sympathy for the two criminals - the police who are pursuing them, on the other hand, are portrayed negatively. Perdita Durango is in a number of gangster films from the 90s, such as Pulp Fiction , Natural Born Killers , From Dusk Till Dawn , and tries to outdo them in depicting violence and breaking taboos . Due to the depictions of violence, the film was viewed extremely critically by the majority of film critics.
