Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria

The organization of the Jews in Bulgaria “Shalom” ( Bulgarian Организацията на евреите в България “Шалом” ) deals with the coordination of the different Jewish communities in Bulgaria , where about 1400 Jews live.

It acts as an umbrella organization and includes all areas of Jewish life in the form of a variety of programs and projects. Schalom has the following areas of activity:

  • Maintaining and promoting Jewish values ​​and traditions in ethnic, linguistic and cultural terms
  • Defense of the constitutional rights of its members and of all Jews in Bulgaria against the state, its organs and other public and political institutions in the country
  • Activities to reduce all forms of racism, totalitarianism, anti-democratic tendencies, fascism, anti-Semitism and national chauvinism
  • Cooperation with all societies and organizations at home and abroad that comply with the principles of democracy and human rights
  • Organization of seminars, school facilities and other training centers
  • Public relations and popularization of Jewish values
  • Promotion of education and culture
  • Organization of concerts, plays and book presentations
  • Creation of data archives
  • Maintaining the historical Jewish sites ( synagogues , graves , monuments, etc.)

Young Austrians have been doing memorial service at Schalom since 2005 .
