action

While Grace Phillips is serving as a soldier in Iraq , her husband Stanley, a former soldier and now employee in a shop called "Homestore", stays behind in Minnesota with their two children, twelve-year-old Heidi and eight-year-old Dawn . One morning Stanley learns that his wife was killed in an operation. He doesn't have the heart to tell the two children the truth and decides to take them on a trip to the amusement park “Enchanted Gardens” in Florida .

Right from the start, Heidi senses that something is wrong. When she calls the school to let them know that she and her sister won't come for a few days, she finds understanding, which irritates her a little. In addition, she should actually prepare a presentation about her mother, which she will not get ready by the agreed date. Here, too, she does not have any problems, as she learns that the teacher is currently in the hospital and is having her child.

On the way to Florida Stanley decides to make a detour to see his mother. There they only meet Stanley's brother John, who - although already in his early 30s - is living through the day and wondering whether he should go to university after all. John's manner always leads to friction between the two brothers. By chance, John learns of Grace's death and confronts Stanley. The latter, however, rudely tells him that this is none of his business and disappears with the two girls before his mother comes home.

Stanley found it increasingly difficult to maintain his composure, and so he made several calls to his home to hear his wife's voice on the answering machine. He keeps leaving messages for Grace and eventually asks her to tell him how to manage to tell the children the truth. Heidi often asks who he's calling, to which Stanley reacts with white lies. Once he claims that he spoke to Heidi's teacher on the phone. However, the girl knows that she is in the hospital, but says nothing.

Eventually the three of them arrive at the amusement park. They have a lot of fun with the many carousels, but sooner than expected the children have experienced all the highlights and want to go home again. Stanley senses that it is now time to get the truth out. On the way home, he pulls off the road without further ado and only stops again when they have arrived directly at the sea. There he finally reveals to the two of them that their mother was so badly injured on duty that she could not be helped. Heidi and Dawn burst into tears as Stanley tries to comfort them. You stay on the beach until the sun goes down.

At Grace's funeral, Heidi finally gives the lecture planned for the school about her mother's life.

Reviews

The lexicon of international film describes the film as "[l] ice drama with road movie echoes, [...] with the trauma of an entire nation and the damage to the American Dream caused by the war in Iraq being reflected behind the family tragedy". The film is convincing "[v] isually and atmospherically dark and dreary, [...] not least because of its main actor".

Kirk Honeycutt described the film in The Hollywood Reporter on January 23, 2007 as "manipulative" and "disappointing". John Cusack played "surprisingly monotonous".

Todd McCarthy wrote in Variety on January 22, 2007, the film takes the perspective of the war opponents. However, his emotional impact and family background would make him interesting to people across the spectrum of political views. The range of means of expression used by John Cusack seems to be very limited (“it seems a limited one in a small range”).
