Jean-Louis Bompoint

Jean-Louis Bompoint (born June 10, 1960 in La Rochelle ) is a French cameraman , director , animated filmmaker and musician .

Life

Bompoint was interested in animated films as a child. At the age of 12 he founded a film club at his school and began to correspond with Norman McLaren , who taught him the basics of animation film. After completing his studies, he left Bordeaux in 1983 and moved to Paris , where he worked on his first animation projects. After Bompoint met Michel Gondry in 1983 , they began a long-term collaboration on numerous short films, music videos and commercials.

From the mid-1980s, Bompoint specialized in animation film. In addition to personal projects, he was also involved in the production of larger animation projects as an editor, head of post-production and later as a supervisor. In 1990 Bompoint took over the restoration of Jean Vigo's film Atalante together with Pierre Philippe , whereby both of them practically completely integrated the material of an early copy of the film discovered by Bompoint, which was later criticized as "too enthusiastic" in some cases. After Bernard Eisenschitz and Vigo's daughter Luce restored the film again in 2001 and removed some scenes from the 1990s version, there was a sharp dispute between Bompoint and Eisenschitz. In 1997 Bompoint was responsible for the creation of the two animation series Kassai and Leuk as well as Santa Claus & Co. KG . He then worked for several years in China and South Korea.

With Michel Gondry, other music videos and commercials were created in parallel, as well as the feature film Science of Sleep - Instructions for Dreaming in 2012 . Later Bompoint also took over the camera work for directors such as James C. Strouse , Sallie Aprahamian and Natalie Portman .

Bompoint also taught at several film schools.
