Mother with two children is a sculpture by the artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) .

From 1910, Kollwitz dealt with the mother-child theme. In 1936 the sculpture was completed after four years of work. The original is in the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Cologne . In 1997, on the 120th birthday of Kollwitz, a stone copy of the sculpture was set up on the premises of the Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg district office , where the former home of the Kollwitz family stood.

history

In the beginning, Kollwitz planned the sculpture as a mother figure with only one child. After the birth of her twin granddaughters, she added a second child. The three nude figures represent motherly love, but also the well-known fear of losing children. Kollwitz lost a son in World War I , which is why the issues of motherly love and loss were central to the artist. The placement of the sculpture makes it clear that “the culture of remembrance closely linked the artist's life with German history”.
