The Wedding (alternate title: Oprah Winfrey Presents: The Wedding ) is an American film drama from 1998 , produced for television . Directed by Charles Burnett , the screenplay was written by Lisa Jones based on a novel by Dorothy West .
action
The action takes place on Martha's Vineyard in 1953. The African American woman Shelby Coles comes from a wealthy family and falls in love with the white musician Meade Howell, whom she wants to marry. Her mother Corinne does not accept the connection at first, but later shows understanding for it.
Flashbacks show that Shelby's father married Clark not for love but for financial reasons. Corinne finds tickets that show her husband wants to leave her because of another woman. She burns the tickets and later confronts her husband.
A few weeks before the wedding, Howell reveals to his fiancée's family that his family will be staying away from the celebrations. The Coles, who belong to the better social circles, meet the rejection of the impoverished Howells with sarcasm.
Shelby meets the single father of three daughters, the African American Lute McNeil. You and McNeil get closer. McNeil is married, but his separated wife refuses to divorce. In the excitement he causes a car accident in which one of his daughters is injured. Shelby returns to Howell, whom she ends up marrying.
Awards
Shirley Knight was nominated for the Golden Satellite Award in 1999. Halle Berry, Lynn Whitfield and Outstanding TV Feature were nominated for the 1999 Image Award .
