Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan are two streets in the old town Gamla Stan of Stockholm in Sweden .

Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan have long been the main streets of Gamla Stan . They followed the course of the first city or defensive wall, which ran above the streets. They run in a north-south direction and meet at Järntorget (Eisenplatz). Both were mentioned in writing as early as the 15th century and were called Allmänningsgatan (street of the general public) or Långa gatan (long street) in 1444 , sometimes with the addition "west" and "east". In 1546 the Västerlångatan is called "Westra longgatun" and in 1558 the Österlånggatan is called "Østra long gatun" .

The buildings today mainly consist of multi-storey, plastered stone houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. While Österlånggatan plays a more withdrawn role in terms of tourism, Västerlånggatan Gamla Stans is a large shopping street with tourist-oriented restaurants and souvenir shops.

At the address Västerlånggatan 31 was the apartment of the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme , who was murdered on Friday, February 28, 1986 on Sveavägen .
