Järntorget (Stockholm)
The Järntorget ( German Eisenplatz ) is a square in Gamla Stan , the old town of the Swedish capital Stockholm .
location
The course is located in the south of Gamla Stan. This is where the two main roads, Västerlånggatan and Osterlånggatan, come from the north . The Triewaldsgränd and Järntorgsgatan meet from the south, Norra Bankogränd and Södra Bankogränd from the east .
The square is densely surrounded by historical buildings. There are several restaurants on the ground floors, which in the summer months also use the area of the square itself for gastronomic purposes. These include the oldest Cafe in Stockholm, founded in 1785 based on the Viennese example, the Sundbergs konditori . The only supermarket in Gamla Stan is on the south side of the square.
On the east side of the square is the Södra Bankohuset , the former seat of the Swedish Reichsbank . Before that, the Evert Taube statue was erected in 1985 . A historical pump stands in the center of the square.
history
The name of the square means iron place and goes back to its former function as a transshipment point for iron goods. The square was first mentioned in 1489. At first, grain was also traded on the square, which resulted in the previously used name Korntorget (grain market). However, this name was no longer in use at the latest at the beginning of the 16th century. The city scales were also located on the square until 1662.
The bank was built around 1675 and was used as the seat of the Reichsbank until 1906.
