Johnny Almond (born July 20, 1946 in the London Borough of Enfield , Middlesex , England , † November 18, 2009 , in Hayward (California) ) was a British multi-instrumentalist who was known for his band membership with John Mayall and Mark-Almond , where he has played baritone saxophone , tenor saxophone , alto saxophone , soprano saxophone , transverse flute , alto flute , bass flute , Hammond organ and vibraphone , among others .

life and work

As the son of a drummer, Johnny Almond was influenced by his father's musical preferences (1940s jazz by Benny Goodman and Woody Herman ). Almond began his own musical education with alto saxophone , later followed by tenor saxophone , flute, keyboards and vibraphone as other instruments.

In the field of jazz music, Almond particularly valued modern jazz and the musicians Eddie Lockjaw Davis , Yusef Laatef, Roland Kirk and Woody Herman . Almond founded his own jazz band as a teenager. He later played with Tony Knights Chess Men for about a year before he got his first rock 'n' roll experience in Zoot Money's Big Roll Band . In 1968 Almond moved to the Alan Price Set and in 1969 to John Mayall . In the same year he founded the "Johnny Almond Music Machine" with which he recorded the albums "Patent Pending" and "Hollywood Blues" in 1969, the later re-releases (on CD) of which were particularly noticed in Europe and Japan.

On Patent Pending, Almond is joined by Geoff Condon, Jimmy Crawford , Steve Hammond, Roger Sutton and Johnny Wiggins. On the follow-up album "Hollywood Blues" he played with Curtis Amy , Hadley Caliman , Joe Harris , Charles Kynard , Ray Neapolitan, Joe Pass , Earl Palmer and Vi Redd .

In the early 1970s he founded the folk-rock-jazz band Mark-Almond with Jon Mark , who together with him was part of Mayall's successful and style-forming "Turning Point" quartet, which had released eight albums by the early 1980s. Most recently, Almond worked in the San Francisco area as a session musician and music teacher.
