Bruno Schüller

Bruno Schüller SJ (born November 9, 1925 in Rhens , Mayen-Koblenz district ; † October 30, 2007 in Münster ) was a German Jesuit and moral theologian .

Life

Schüller entered the North German Province of the Society of Jesus in 1946 . He studied philosophy at the University of Philosophy Munich in Pullach near Munich and theology at the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main and at the Pontifical University Gregoriana PUG in Rome . He was in 1963 with a moral theological work "The reign of Christ and secular law" in at the PUG Josef Fuchs to Dr. theol. PhD . In 1956 he was ordained a priest in the Imperial Cathedral of St. Bartholomew in Frankfurt am Main.

In 1961 he became a lecturer in moral theology at the Frankfurt Jesuit University of Sankt Georgen. In 1968 he received a reputation as a Professor of Moral Theology at the University of Bochum . In 1974 he changed to the chair for moral theology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and became director of the seminar for moral theology; he turned down offers to the University of Regensburg , the Catholic University of America CUA and the Georgetown University in Washington, DC .

In 1991 he retired .

Act

Bruno Schüller was particularly committed to the re-establishment of ethical norms. He pleaded for a " teleological ethics " that makes judgments about moral behavior based on its goal.

His work "The Justification of Moral Judgments" from 1973 is considered the standard work of contemporary moral theology. From 1973 he was editor of the "Moral Theological Studies".

He was a long-time member of the “Societas Ethica” and the ethics committee of the University of Münster.

honors and awards

He was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1984 by the Evangelical Faculty of Lund University , Sweden . Since 1986 he was a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .
