Robert plans

Plant Robert grape

The Plant Robert (also Plant Robez or Plant Robaz ) is a red wine variety that is grown exclusively in Lavaux in Switzerland . It is presumably a Gamay clone, which is not very productive and produces correspondingly concentrated wines. In 2014, Plant Robert planted 7.68 hectares of vineyards. After the grape variety almost died out in the middle of the 20th century, its existence is now secured and the area under cultivation is increasing.

history

Plant Robert was first mentioned in writing at the end of the 19th century. In 1911, Burnat and Anken described it for the first time in detail ampelographically in Les cépages-greffons . After that, the area under cultivation decreased continuously.

Plant Robert owes its survival to the winemakers Pierre Paley from Epesses and Robert Monnier from Cully . In the mid-1960s, they grafted branches of the last known vines onto their vines and poured the wine made from them in the Du Raisin restaurant . From 1978 they also sold the Plant Robert in bottles.

Todays situation

All of the vines grown today come from the grafts of Paley and Monnier. Since 2002, the producers of the variety have joined forces in the Association 3R , whose name is an allusion to the three spellings Robert - Robez - Robaz and which defines certain quality criteria for its members.

For the Plant Robert label, cultivation, vinification and bottling must take place exclusively in Lavaux. The vines must have a certificate of origin and may only be purchased from recognized suppliers. The yield may be a maximum of 1 kg per square meter, for vines under five years a maximum of 500 g. The Plant Robert must be vinified red (no rosé wine or Federweisser ), closed with a natural cork and may not be put on the market before September after the harvest.

Food

The Plant Robert is a dark red, concentrated wine that should ideally be stored for three to four years before consumption. It is vinified in oak barrels both without wood treatment and with different degrees of aging, which affects its shelf life. A good Plant Robert can easily be stored for ten years.

The strong red wine is suitable to accompany red meat and cheese, but also has enough finesse for lighter dishes. However, it should not be served with overly spicy dishes, as these can drown it out.
