The River Rouge , also known as the Rouge River , is a river in southeastern Michigan , United States .

It has a length of about 203 kilometers and is divided into four arms: the actual Rouge River (Main), as well as the Upper, Middle and Lower, which each flow in from the west. The river has a water catchment area of around 1200 km².

course

The actual River Rouge has its source in Rochester Hills, Upper River Rouge in Farmington Hills , Middle River Rouge in Northville and Lower River Rouge in Superior Township in Washtenaw County . The Upper River Rouge flows into the main stream in Detroit, east of Redford Township, the Middle Rouge joins the northern border of Dearborn, and the Lower Rouge mixes its waters about two miles downstream. Other larger cities on the river are Dearborn , Dearborn Heights , Southfield , Rochester Hills. After the river crosses the city of River Rouge , it empties into the Detroit River . It mainly flows through Oakland County and Wayne County .

use

In the Dearborn area, the river is used to supply electricity to the Ford River Rouge Complex located there . Due to the strong industrialization on the lower reaches of the river, the water quality in this area was severely impaired.

The mouth of the river has been modified and dredged for shipping by the United States Army Corps of Engineers . Soil contaminated with pollutants was dumped on Grassy Island near the river mouth.

Since 1992 there has been an initiative, the so-called Rouge River Project , which tries to significantly improve the water quality again.
