action
The Cyclops Leela does not know her origin and thinks she is the last of her kind. When she meets an unknown one-eyed man on the Internet, she aborts a delivery order and flies with her colleagues from Planet Express - the delivery boy Fry and the robot Bender - to the planet of the alien. This is called the Alcazar and presents the world as Cyclopia , home of the Cyclopes , who are extinct except for Leela and Alcazar. He is empathetic and can seduce Leela so. They decide to re-establish the Cyclopean civilization together.
The next morning, Alcazar has changed: he has become a macho- like bully who no longer swarms around Leela, but orders them around. Nevertheless, Leela accepts a marriage proposal because she feels obliged to her extinct people. Leela's other work colleagues - Prof. Farnsworth , Amy Wong , Hermes Conrad and Dr. Zoidberg - on. Fry distrusts Alcazar and investigates with Bender. He finds out that Alcazar is a marriage swindler who can change shape. He has already duped four other women with the same trick and wants to marry all of them on the same day. Fry can uncover this in time to prevent the wedding.
background
The original title of the episode is A Bicyclops Built for Two (German about: Ein Bi-Zyklop made for two ). He alludes to the line “ A Bicycle Built for Two ” (German: “A bicycle made for two”) from Harry Dacre's song Daisy Bell . This song was the first to be "sung" by a computer using a synthetic voice , in 1961 by an IBM 704 . This incident has been referred to several times in film and television history, including in Stanley Kubrick's 2001 film : A Space Odyssey . Also Futurama itself takes up the issue in a later episode again on: In Love and Rockets Bender sings the song in a romantic scene.
The plot contains a number of allusions to the American sitcom A Terribly Nice Family , especially after the supposedly sensitive Alcazar turned out to be a misogynist grouch. For example, the looks, posture, and movements of Leela and Alcazar are very similar to those of Al and Peggy Bundy , the sitcom's main characters. A peculiarity of this allusion is that Katey Sagal , the spokeswoman for Leela, also played the role of Peggy Bundy. This level is lost in the German dubbed version, as Sagal is dubbed in A terrible family by Kathrin Ackermann and in Futurama by Marion Sawatzki .
production
Wedding Anniversary on Cyclopia was created as the ninth episode of the second production season of Futurama , making it the 22nd episode overall. The script was written by Eric Kaplan and directed by Susan Dietter . In addition to the speakers for the main characters , David Herman took on the part of the Alcazar. Herman worked regularly for the series, including loaning to recurring supporting characters such as Scruffy and Dr. Wernstrom his voice and was later taken over into the main cast.
publication
The episode was first broadcast on March 19, 2000 on the US broadcaster FOX. This had canceled the broadcast of the first production season prematurely and moved the remaining episodes to the second broadcast season. Therefore, the wedding day on Cyclopia was the 13th episode of the second broadcast season (see first broadcast of Futurama ).
The German dubbed version premiered on February 5, 2001 on ProSieben.
Awards
For her work on this episode, Bari Kumar won an Emmy in 2000 for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation . After several nominations that did not result in awards, this was the first time that Futurama was honored with the television award.
In addition, director Susie Dietter was nominated for an Annie Award in the Outstanding Individual Achievement for Directing in an Animated Television Production category. However, she had to admit defeat to her colleague Brian Sheesley , who was also suggested in this category with the Futurama episode The Strange Behavior of Sexually Mature Crustaceans at Mating Season and she won.
The Internet portal TV.com selected the episode in its list of the ten best Futurama episodes in eighth place.
