The Buckingham Fountain ( English Buckingham Fountain , officially Clarence F. Buckingham Memorial Fountain ) is a fountain in Grant Park in the US city of Chicago .

It was designed by Edward H. Bennet and decorated with sculptures by Jacques Lambert. The Latone fountain from the gardens of Versailles Palace served as a model . The name pays tribute to Kate Buckingham, who donated a million dollars to build the fountain and dedicated it to the people of Chicago. It was inaugurated on August 26, 1927. Given its location not far from the lake's shore, the fountain's main basin represents Lake Michigan , including four Art Deco- style bronze seahorse sculpture sets around the fountain , symbolizing the four states bordering the lake. The fountain operates from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. from mid-April to mid-October. It contains about 5.7 million liters of water, over 800 built-in lights and is one of the largest fountains in the world. The Buckingham Fountain marked the eastern end of the legendary Route 66 .

The fountain can be seen in the title sequence of the series A Terribly Nice Family .
