Leon Pownall

Leon Pownall (born April 26, 1943 near Wrexham , Wales , Great Britain , † June 2, 2006 in Stratford , Ontario ) was a Canadian actor , writer and acting teacher.

Life

Pownall, born in Wales, moved with his family to the Canadian city of Hamilton in 1957 . In 1964 he was accepted into the National Theater School of Canada , but at the same time received an engagement at the Stratford Festival of Canada . He played in eight seasons including Henry V (1966) and Laertes (1969). After moving to the west coast of Canada and doing a brief business career in Vancouver , he became an acting teacher at the Matsqui Penitentiary in Abbotsford . At the same time he worked as artistic director at the White Rock Summer Theater and at the University of British Columbia .

In 1986 he returned to Stratford and gave Henry VIII. , Later Claudius in Hamlet and Long John Silver in Treasure Island ( Treasure Iceland ) (1991) and Mark Antony in Antony and Cleopatra (1993). He had a supporting role in 1989 as a Latin teacher McAllister in The Dead Poets Club . In 2000 he worked in the feature film Dirty Pictures and in 2001 in the drama The Day Reagan Was Shot . In 2002 he had great success with the one-man play Do Not Go Gentle about the life of Dylan Thomas .

In 1998 he was nominated for the Gemini Award for his performance in The Sleep Room .
